Clean Planet Energy announces plans for £35m chemical recycling facility in Lincolnshire
Clean Planet Energy has announced plans to develop a 25,000 tonne per year capacity chemical recycling facility in Lincolnshire, which will become the company’s second site in the UK after its Teesside facility is expected to start operations next year.
The facility, which will be located on the Foxhills Industrial Estate in Scunthorpe, is set to transform plastics that would otherwise be incinerated or sent to landfill, into circular petrochemical feedstocks and ultra-low sulphur fuels. The site has now secured planning permission, following approval by North Lincolnshire Council, and is being developed in collaboration with waste sector investor Crossroads Real Estate.
According to the company, the new site will process residual plastics such as films, flexibles, and multi-layered materials, which currently fall outside the scope of conventional mechanical recycling.
The announcement follows Clean Planet Energy’s recent agreement with global energy company Equinor to explore the potential use of its products in the production of lower-carbon fuels and chemicals. The company has stated that outputs from its UK facilities will help meet growing demand for circular feedstocks from both the petrochemical and aviation sectors.
Construction on the Lincolnshire site is expected to begin within the next 12 months, with operations forecast to start by 2027.
