Biffa Polymers Recycle 10 billion HDPE Milk Bottles!

Biffa Polymers has achieved a significant milestone by recycling 10 billion HDPE plastic milk bottles through its closed-loop system demonstrating their commitment to advancing the UK’s circular economy.

By recycling used bottles into new ones, Biffa Polymers demonstrates leadership in resource management and shows that circular solutions are achievable. Its advanced facilities make sure plastic waste is collected, processed, and reused within the UK, cutting carbon emissions and reducing dependence on exports. This approach shows that scaling domestic recycling infrastructure is essential for tackling the UK’s plastic waste crisis and builds a more sustainable future.

Research commissioned by Biffa reveals that ending plastic waste exports by 2030 could create 15 new recycling plants, attract £800 million in private investment, and generate over 9,000 jobs. These changes could boost the economy by nearly £900 million annually without public funding, while protecting the environment from harmful waste exports. Biffa Polymers exemplifies how innovation and investment in recycling can deliver both economic and environmental benefits.

Despite this achievement, Biffa Polymer’s Managing Director, James McLeary, stresses that more needs to be done calling for stronger policies, including phasing out exports, tightening the Plastic Packaging Tax, and introducing certification for imported recycled plastic. The challenge now is to turn achievements like this into standard practice, ensuring that progress is consistent and widespread across the industry.
