WRAP & DEFRA Launch Report on UK Recycling Infrastructure and Capacities

WRAP and DEFRA have published a new report examining recycling infrastructure investment opportunities in preparation for the implementation of key policies outlined in the 2018 Resources and Waste Strategy.

The report highlights food waste, plastics, and paper and cardboard as priority investment areas, with projected growth ranging between 39% and 100%.

Recent analysis indicates that the implementation of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR), and Simpler Recycling is expected to drive a 52% increase in plastic packaging volumes between 2020 and 2035, reaching approximately 1.6 million tonnes (Mt).

The report aims to provide clear signals to investors regarding areas of over/under-provision in waste management capacity, helping to guide targeted investment.

The analysis is based on waste generation data from 2020, with projections for 2025, 2030, and 2035, considering impacts of key policy reforms.
