Two waste teams collecting bins from over 116,000 homes across Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire have joined forces in a bid to reduce cost. Cambridge City Councils fleet of 27 bin lorries have begun operating from Waterbeach depot, where South Cambridgeshire District Councils waste operations are based.
The management teams for the two councils waste operations came together in August saving over £100,000 a year and with the operations now working out of one depot, further efficiencies will be sought to drive down costs.
Cambridge City Councils waste crews and staff had previously operated from a depot on Mill Road which is earmarked for redevelopment in the future.
The single shared waste management team are now working on integrating the bin collection rounds across the two districts in order to make efficiency savings on fuel and vehicles. It is expected the annual savings from the move to a shared waste service will be around £700,000.
Both Councils already take waste and recycling they collect to the processing centres near the Waterbeach depot.

Podback is the nationwide coffee pod recycling service, created to give people who enjoy the quality and taste of coffee pods simple and convenient ways to recycle them.
Podback is a not-for-profit organisation, established by the biggest names in coffee pod systems – Nestle and Jacobs Douwe Egberts UK – to develop an end-to-end recycling solution for used coffee pods. They are working with local authorities and retailers to develop a nationwide collection infrastructure, and with UK reprocessors to recover the coffee, aluminium and plastic.
Customers of Podback can recycle their used pods through drop-off points in retail stores, at local authority recycling centres as well as Yodel collection locations. Plastic pods are recycled in Yorkshire, and aluminium pods are recycled in Cheshire. The pods are shredded to remove the coffee grounds, which are processed by anaerobic digestion facilities, producing renewable energy (biogas) and soil improver.
Podback member brands represent over 80% of the UK coffee pod market, including Nespresso, NESCAFE Dolce Gusto and Tassimo, major retailers and independent roasters.

Hydro-PRT can process contaminated and mixed plastics, such as post-consumer flexible and rigid food packaging, producing high yields of circular hydrocarbon products for use in the manufacture of virgin-quality, recycled plastics. There is no limit to the number of times the same material can be recycled – meaning Hydro-PRT has the potential to significantly reduce the need for fossil resources in plastic production and permanently increase material circularity in the plastics industry. Independent LCAs (Lifecycle Assessments) show that Hydro-PRT is 80% less carbon intensive when compared to incinerating plastic waste, meaning that Mura Wilton is set to save c. 40,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

- Food waste — The national strategy proposes weekly food waste collections from 2023, in preparation they have been running a trial for food waste collections in South Kesteven to understand the challenges this may bring. They are seeking a sustainable and renewable solution which will be explored over the next few years.
- Plastics — Since the adoption of the Lincolnshire strategy, the world has seen a blaze of interest in plastic waste and how the recycling we collect is handled. Media investigations have challenged waste management practices and raised the profile of accountability and social responsibility.
- Waste crime — The Environment Agency (EA) has an open invitation to LWP meetings providing advice and guidance, the LWP also support the EA in waste crime operations in the county.
- Recycling quality — A separated paper and card collection trial in place from September 2019 with the aim of avoiding any contact with liquids and food, keeping it clean and dry, means they can meet high quality standards of the paper mills who recycle waste paper and card saving vital natural resources. The trial has been a great success and plans are underway to expand collections to more areas in Lincolnshire.
- The wider environment — Driving many miles to collect and dispose of waste increases the carbon footprint for their transport operations so they have worked to optimise routes and are investigating how, in the longer term, they can change to different vehicle fuels to reduce their CO2 emissions.
