Defra Release Guidance on 2027 Plastic Wet Wipe Ban
The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs released detailed guidance for the new ban on plastic-containing wet wipes, set to take effect in England from 19 May 2027. This measure is part of a coordinated UK-wide effort to reduce plastic pollution in waterways and protect the natural environment.
The ban makes it illegal for online or instore retailers to sell or supply single-use wet wipes that contain plastic, including baby wipes, makeup removal wipes, moist toilet tissue, household cleaning wipes, and personal hygiene items. Local authorities will serve as regulators and conduct inspections to ensure compliance. If found, offenders risk fines and investigative costs.
Plastic-free and reusable wet wipes remain compliant and unaffected by the ban. The guidance specifies acceptable alternatives, advising consumers to look for “plastic-free” labelling. Limited exemptions for plastic wet-wipe use are in place for medical, healthcare, and business uses. Wet wipes containing plastic can still be supplied to:
• Medical professionals and facilities for clinical use
• Registered pharmacies dispensing to customers upon request—though such wipes must not be displayed or advertised
• Businesses, charities, and public sector organisations (excluding sales to individual consumers).
