UKRI Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge Celebration Event

On Wednesday RECOUP attended the UKRI Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge celebration event at The Royal Society in London.   An event to recognise the successes and share the outcomes of a five year programme from Innovate UK which helped support a wide range of projects connected to UK plastic packaging circularity development. Many of the supported projects were in attendance to share their insights and progress across a whole range of areas including films and flexibles, single use packaging innovations, alternative plastics, mechanical recycling, chemical recycling, reuse and refill.  This included the seven projects that had direct RECOUP involvement as a partner or project lead.

Stuart Foster spoke in the opening session at the event focussing on the connection between innovation and policy. He recognised the achievements and hard work of the SSPP team including Paul Davidson and Nick Cliffe over the past five years, which they backed up with some impressive statistics from the newly published SSPP report. Stuart also promoted the need for ongoing support for UK plastic and packaging innovation through both government and business over the next 5 years, stating that he ‘hoped this was the end of the beginning’ for innovation in this space.
