RAM and CEN Timescales
The RAM originated by DEFRA has been published. There are, however, some outstanding issues and questions. This includes a number asked by RECOUP, some on behalf of our members.
Many of the questions have resulted in sections removed from the RAM, “Removed from the RAM for 2025 assessment.” We are not sure which format this will take, but there is a lot to consider for the next version if the target is to resolve these questions before the end of this year.
The CEN project to harmonise packaging recyclability (initially just plastic, now all packaging) has delivered 14 draft standards. If approved, the target is November 2025 publication.
CEN Next Steps;
- Proofreading by the CEN project manager to make sure presentation, format, etc. will be accepted by CEN.
- Formal vote by CEN which may include questions and corrections. The Formal Vote is open and runs for 8 weeks, so July and August.
- Final corrections (editorials only)
- Translation (5 weeks) and publication by the end of the year.
- In January, the CEN will launch the work into creation of a new version, revision of the standards will run throughout 2026.
So, as a comparison, CEN is slightly behind RAM in terms of implementation date.
