Celebrate Easter Sustainably

Did you know that, in the UK, our Easter celebrations use approximately 7,500 miles of wrapping paper, 160 tonnes of foil packaging and around 10 million Easter cards are sent. In addition, 8 million hot cross buns are wasted, along with 19 million roast potatoes and 8 million Easter eggs (Business Watse 2025).

Easter is a time of rebirth and renewal, so what better time to remind residents of the merits of giving new life to the things they no longer want or need through better recycling. Contaminating our recycling bins with the wrong or dirty items can mean the contents are rejected and sent to landfill. Around one fifth of recycling is unrecyclable because of this issue (Dennis, 2022). Additionally, cutting food waste means we save money and reduce carbon emissions (UNEP, 2021).

We have created social media assets to remind people how to recycle right and reduce food waste this Easter. In addition, we have developed school resources to teach young people to recycle right and get creative. You can download all of this at: https://pledge2recycle.co.uk/local-authority/
