BSI Waste Management Specification Updated

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has released a revised version of their waste resource management specification PAS 402:2025, which comes into effect today, 28 February 2025, to enhance waste management processes and support the move to a circular economy.

The updated specification provides a blueprint for waste management organisations to report performance in key areas such as landfill diversion and material recovery rates. It aims to improve recyclate quality, simplify data reporting and reduce the costs and risks associated with legislative compliance.

The revision introduces several key changes:

• Climate Change Risk Assessment: Organisations are now required to assess and report on climate-related risks associated with their operations.

• Enhanced Performance Reporting: The specification defines two distinct categories of clients—waste producers and receivers of outgoing materials, including end-of-waste products—to provide clearer reporting structures.

• Corrective, Preventive, and Improvement Actions: Organisations must exhibit how they manage compliance with legal and other requirements. Actions taken must be documented.

• Landfill Diversion and Material Recovery Rates: A new section details methods for determining and reporting these, encouraging transparency and accountability.

• Annual Recovery and Disposal Tonnage Tables: The inclusion of standardised tables facilitates consistent reporting of recovery and disposal data.
