Defra Publishes Supplementary Guidance for the Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM)

Defra published supplementary guidance on 4 September 2025 to support producers with the Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM), providing further clarity on how obligations should be met under Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR).

Defra emphasised the guidance is not a replacement for the RAM itself, but a companion document designed to help producers apply the methodology consistently. It also confirmed the RAM will be updated once a year and the supplementary guidance may be updated more frequently if further clarifications are needed.

The guidance answers common queries, including how packaging should be reported in the Report Packaging Data (RPD) online system; compliance and enforcement; sortation considerations; labelling; chemical contaminants; medical packaging; and reinforces record-keeping requirements, with producers expected to retain recyclability assessment records for a minimum of seven years.

Defra also reminds stakeholders that their Technical Advisory Committee is available to help resolve disputes and provide further advice where necessary.
