RECOUP Plastics Resources and Recycling Conference 2021

The RECOUP Plastics Resources and Recycling Conference 2021 brought together brands, retailers, recyclers, Local Authorities and Waste Management companies for the first time in 2 years.   Discussions covered topics such as climate change, net zero aspirations and plastics recycling.  The unique event at KingsGate Conference Centre, brought together over 400 delegates with attendees either online or in person.

Stuart Foster, RECOUP CEO, opened the Conference and thanked those last-minute speakers who had stood in due to issues with COVID travel or the fuel crisis – it was very much appreciated by the whole team.   Foster reiterated that the long-term ambitions around plastic resource efficiency, and the need to further increase plastic recycling and circularity are as important as ever. Foster commented that he was proud that over the years RECOUP has brought integrity, credibility, independence, and evidence to the table.  In essence RECOUP is substance over style.  Special mention was given to RECOUP outgoing Chair Mike Barney for his “outstanding contribution and dedication to RECOUP”.  Stuart also welcomed Jim Armstrong, the incoming Chair of Trustees.

Climate Change and Plastics

RECOUP welcomed back TV Presenter and host of Radio 4 ‘Costing the Earth’, Tom Heap, to moderate the morning sessions.

Heap, noted it had been some time since people met face-to-face, it felt good to recognise the benefits of both a face-to-face and an online meeting, whilst we couldn’t pop the washing in during the break the value of networking couldn’t be underestimated. Heap commented that since the last Conference there has been a move away from “Plastiphobia” with people looking at plastic through a new lens.

The virtues and values of plastics have come to the fore over the last 18 months in helping protect us from the spread of the virus.”
