Packaging Design and Technology Overview

Packaging has a key role to play in helping society live more sustainably. Without it, many of the goods manufactured or grown would be damaged or spoiled before they reached the shops.

Packaging should be designed to satisfy technical, consumer and customer needs in a way that minimises environmental impact. This means, that amongst other things, packaging should be designed to use the minimum amount of resources for purpose and once it has completed its job, the scope for recycling or recovery maximised.

Industries involved in the packaging industry understand the demonstrable benefits of plastics as a packaging material. Its lightweight nature is of particular benefit due to transport cost minimisation. In addition, plastics are often the most appropriate material to meet consumer demands of ensured freshness, safety and product visibility.

RECOUP work on projects, in any area, relating to plastics packaging, previous projects have included:

  • Shelf reviews of products available on the market and the reliability of the information relating to their recyclability.
  • Pack reviews that show truly if your packaging has what it takes to be 100% recycled.

Pack Reviews

RECOUP take sample packaging and review based on typical UK systems, and test through appropriate sorting and reprocessing sites where required. This is assessed against accepted recyclability criteria. A report is provided to confirm each step of the recycling process and documenting how the samples react within those systems, with the material types and component assessed against recyclability.

RECOUP members can request project work and tests to be carried out. Much of the work is for individual members and is often confidential for commercial reasons.
