RECOUP SUPPORTING WITH CO-OP AS IT LAUNCHES FRONT OF STORE PLASTIC FILM RECYCLING SCHEME

Date Published: Friday 11th September 2020

Shoppers will be able to recycle ‘scrunchable’ plastic film quickly and easily thanks to a new in-store film collection scheme from the Co-op, which is being trialled in selected stores as of Tuesday 8th September. The initiative forms part of a 50-store roll out which aims to provide an accessible disposal route for the material, which is only collected by 16% of Local Authorities as part of their kerbside collection service provision.

In-store collection points will accept all types of clean, ‘scrunchy’ plastic film – from any brand or retailer – including plastic carrier bags, lids from ready meals and yoghurt pots, wine box inners, chocolate, cake and biscuit wrappers, fruit and vegetable flow wrap and toilet roll wrappers. Messaging around ‘clean it, scrunch it, bin it’ will feature on store signage in a bid to educate consumers on what to do with the material. The deposited film waste will then go on to be sorted and where possible, processed into waste disposal bin liners for use in Co-op stores.

RECOUP are a member of the Co-op project team have seen first-hand the ambition, time and determination from Co-op to develop and launch the scheme. The RECOUP team will be completing material composition analysis on the material that is collected for recycling, to understand the effectiveness of the scheme and also the feedstock for the recycler.
