China import ban could see 350,000 tonnes of unrecycled plastics in 2018

Date Published: Monday 8th January 2018

Following on from China changing its rules on importing waste to be recycled, which means the UK won't be able to send some grades of waste plastic there any more, Vanden Recycling has calculated that an estimated 350,000 tonnes of plastic will go unrecycled and with no alternative market in 2018 because of China‚Äôs import ban.

The company has used HMRC export data, along with stats from the National Packaging Waste Database, to estimate the growth seen in alternative destinations in 2016 and 2017 into 2018 to see to what extent these destinations would fill the gap lost by the almost complete ban on plastics exported to China.
