EA Launch Consultation on Updating Charges for International Waste Shipments
On 4 October, the Environment Agency (EA) launched a public consultation on updating charges for regulating waste shipments in England, with a view of them coming into force from 1 April 2024.
Currently, the cost of the EA’s regulatory activities is greater than the fees it charges waste importers and exporters, with the income from charges on processing applications, data reporting and compliance work to ensure shipments are lawful and do not pose a risk to the environment.
The consultation has been launched to help ensure that the EA has the appropriate resources to provide a quality service and its customers pay the right amount for the work it does to ensure the protection of the environment and human health. It will also help to reduce delays and backlogs to notifications as was seen in 2022.
The deadline to respond to this consultation is 29 November. To see the full consultation from the EA, click here.
In August, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) released a similar consultation on the proposals to amend the transfrontier shipment of waste fees and charges for Scotland. The deadline to respond to this consultation is 21 November. You can submit responses to this here.
