Pledge 4 Plastics - Bournemouth

During summer 2016, Pledge 4 Plastics worked in partnership with Bournemouth Borough Council to engage and encouraging locals, tourists and day-trippers visiting Bournemouth’s famous beaches throughout the summer to put their rubbish in the right bin and make sure that as much packaging as possible is recycled. The campaign received Councillor support from within the Council.

The objective was to promote on-the-go recycling, tackle litter head-on and promote plastics recycling. In the run-up to the campaign’s launch, two warm weekends led to coverage of significant levels of litter left on Bournemouth beach: a local resident’s video went viral and was covered on local and regional news.

A summer engagement campaign used a beach engagement team to directly communicate with the public with a call to action to recycle in Bournemouth, make pledge to recycle, and an invitation to take part in a World Record attempt and the Keepy-Uppy winners on the day received a sports shirt made by Grn Sportswear from recycled plastic bottles and Guinness world record medallion.

The summer activities led to a partnership with a large event in Bournemouth, the week-long Arts Festival by the Sea, and the Dorset-wide Litter Free Coast and Sea initiative in mid-October 2016. This included a day of activities dedicated to discussing litter and recycling: artists displaying their work made from materials recovered from beaches; TOM (Tomorrow’s Oceans Matter) talks, a series of talks that focus on preventing plastic ending up in the ocean; and a plastic bottle “keepy-uppy” Guinness World Record attempt.

As part of the project, Ferndown Middle School were the winners of a bench made from recycled plastic by UK recycler, Marmax. The bench formed part of a prize draw which local schools could enter during the Arts Festival by the Sea.
