Recoup are pleased to announce the launch of a new publication; Domestic mixed plastics packaging –Recycling Guide. It is hoped that this new guide will make a positive contribution to not only the current debate but importantly the good work currently in progress within the industry, providing the first practical guidance to help steer and develop the mixed plastics packaging recycling opportunity in the UK.
We are pleased to attach the guide for your information, which is also available from our website : www.recoup.org
Defining domestic mixed plastics packaging
Mixed plastics is a term that covers all non-bottle plastic packaging sourced from the domestic waste stream and includes rigid and flexible plastic items of various polymer types and colours that are typically found in the household bin. It excludes plastic bottles and non-packaging items.
The new guide takes a practical approach to the development of UK mixed plastics packaging recycling. The eight page guide is aimed at collectors and handlers, with the intention of providing a co-ordinated and consistent specification for those already collecting a range of plastics packaging from households, and providing good practice indicators for others looking to develop mixed plastics packaging recycling systems.
Importantly the guide has not been produced in isolation and takes on board the current UK status, with a ‘what we can do now’ approach, with input from a number of organisations, amongst which are:
- Recoup Services Ltd
- AWS Eco Plastics
- Jayplas
“Taking a realistic approach is the only way forward” says Stuart Foster, Business Development Director of Recoup. “The role of Recoup has always been and will continue to be the provision of practical guidance on plastics packaging recycling, reporting the facts as we find them and dispelling myths and mis-reporting. Recoup work in partnership with our members and other organisations from across the industry, both in the UK & Europe, to develop efficient plastics packaging recycling schemes, of which ‘domestic mixed plastics packaging recycling’ is the next big opportunity. This is a just a starting point. The guide will be updated in accordance with the progress in the UK & Europe. If we can work towards a common goal and a common guide then that would be to the benefit of all.”
What does the guide cover?
- Primary principles
- Recyclability by Design
- Which mixed plastics packaging can currently be recycled
- Why are the limitations identified
- Importance of material quality
- Optimising transport costs
