The sixth Recycling Zone to launch was Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey earlier this month.
This latest zone was opened after only seven weeks of consultation with the project team. Unlike any of the previous five zones which have launched, the zone at Frimley Park is directly supported by Surrey County Council, with the council also making a direct financial contribution towards the project. As a result of the work at Frimley Park , Surrey County Council plan to extend their involvement across the other local hospitals in the county.
The recycling zone at Frimley Park comprises of some 72 recycling units, collecting paper, cans, plastic bottles and general waste. The units are located in a number of key areas around the hospital complex, including some of the wards. Recycling facilities in a hospital environment need to meet stringent hygiene requirements. As such the bins, which are manufactured by Linpac Environmental, will be collected at the end of each day and steam cleaned. They are then put back on the wards the following morning.
The Recycling Zone project aims to roll out 80 zones across the UK by 2011, in away from home locations like theme parks, travel hubs and shopping centres.
‘On the go’ was pushed even higher up the recycling agenda following a meeting of the London Assembly in November. The Assembly’s environment committee met with organisations involved in existing projects including Coca Cola, Transport for London and Earls Court, to discuss how the capital’s recycling rate could be improved by developing ‘on the go’ schemes – particularly for plastics packaging.
