| Annual Local Authorities Plastics Collection Survey 2008 is published | |||

92% of local authorities now offer collection facilities, according to the findings of the Local Authority Plastics Collection Survey 2008. The results also indicate that UK collections are now performing at a rate of nearly 182,000 tonnes per annum, which equates to 4,525 million plastic bottles. To put this increase into context, nearly 35% of bottles in the household waste stream are now being collected for recycling whereas in 2001 this figure was just 3%. The research also found that 23% of local authorities offered some form of collection for other household plastics, such as carrier bags and food tubs and trays.
